Peace in Crisis

I've always loved the snow. Sometimes I ask God to bring us tons of snow, no matter the time of year. For me snow brings a perfect peace that covers over everything. This frozen substance from the heavens has a way of making almost everything stop, slow down and relax, like God is guaranteeing an extra day of rest. Sometimes I need an extra covering of that perfect peace!

In 2015, I visited my friend Joe in the hospital. The day before I had sent him to the hospital because his eyes were completely yellow and he complained of stomach pain. His doctors shared the shocking news that Joe had terminal liver cancer, and only had a few weeks to live.

Joe had had a hard life of addiction, prison and homlessness. It was only in the last few years that he did the work to stay sober, serve alongside me in Chester and give his life to Jesus. Joe became my hero for life in a moment that night in the hospital. He said, “ Thank God this happened now, and not a few years ago. I’m saved now and going to be with Jesus!”

In the midst of a terminal prognosis, my friend Joe trusted in the gospel, demonstrated peace, and looked toward God in a moment that would be heart wrenching for anyone to go through. Ephesians 1: 13 -14 says: When you believed, you were marked in Him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit, who is a deposit guaranteeing our inheritance until the redemption of those who are God’s possession—to the praise of his glory.

No matter where you are in life, no matter what you have done, God has provided a way to be covered in his perfect peace, washed white as snow from sin, set free in Jesus and have assurance of eternal life with him. To me, the best thing we can do is share this Christ-like response in times of crisis and pain. We trust God with the knowns and unknowns, and rest in him just like a slow snow day. Let’s run toward Him like we have the hope of a future with Him… because we do!!
