One Step, Big Payoff

You never know what can happen with just one step of faith! I recently met a man named SC who reached out for support while staying at a local recovery house. We started meeting weekly for free life coaching and counseling on his journey to recovery. In our very first meeting he showed interest in attending church, and I told him about Greenhouse Project’s weekly home church fellowship every Sunday at 2pm.

To my surprise, he showed up that next Sunday! At one of his lowest points in life, he had come seeking an answer in God.

On a typical Sunday at our fellowship, we talk and pray in small groups. SC joined a group to share some things he struggles with. He, a man in his 50s, in the midst of drug addiction and recent release from prison, had suffered a heart attack (and a host of other physical challenges).

Imagine for a moment what that would be like. No family, no friends left to support you. Only the hope of a new start in light of the torment of trauma, pain, and regret. That pain point was the time this man showed up to church. What he doesn’t know is that there was already another man attending that comes from a similar situation. A history of bad choices, drug addiction, and a journey to recovery through a relationship with Jesus. SC and his fellow believer made an important common connection in that small group time.

SC let his new companion JD know he was in a tight spot, unable to afford a mandatory  drug and alcohol exam evaluation without money, insurance or transportation. If the evaluation was not completed by a set date, he’d be in parole violation and sent back to prison. JD’s compassion let him right then and there to help make it happen for SC, providing payment and transportation. Their relationship didn’t stop there! JD offered him work a few days and SC got a sense of real, tangible hope for a future in sobriety.

Some things don’t seem like much in the moment, but every great and mighty tree starts with a small and humble seed. What seems to one man simple and routine, can to another man be life changing. I want to challenge you to see the areas of life that you may overlook and take for granted, that may be exactly what someone else needs. Maybe for you it’s as simple as sharing a past experience, giving someone a ride to work, or simply being an open, listening ear. Don’t overlook the impact and importance that could have in someone else’s life.

These small steps, a day at a time, are part of how the Greenhouse Project operates in helping people grow and transform in Christ. Take a step to be part of a life change story!
